Arsenal manager ‘had £30m to spend’

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was guaranteed a potential £30m to spend on a single player before the football transfer window closed, according to reports.

The Premier League club’s second-biggest shareholder, Danny Fiszman, said Wenger could have the money to spend and added he was backed by the board.

Wenger has been credited with overseeing the development of several players he bought for low figures.

Some of the Frenchman’s cheaper charges have gone on to become international stars worth millions more than the sums he paid for them.

Quoted by the Guardian newspaper, Mr Fiszman said it would be “no problem” if Wenger had asked for £30m to buy a player during the window.

He added buying big names for the team who were mature players would mean they would have to be moulded into the way Wenger likes his squads to play.

Arsenal’s two biggest buys of the summer were Samir Nasri and Mikaël Silvestre from Marseille and Manchester United respectively.

The team have not won a major trophy since 2005 but have gained a reputation for playing some of the most attractive football in the Premier League in the last four years.

The Guardian added Mr Fiszman also said Arsenal were in good financial health even before embarking on a balanced summer spending programme.
